Say it isn't so. I received an email from a respected organization. This is insane. This is America.
Jailing journalists is unacceptable in a democracy. But that's exactly what is happening at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Award winning journalist and host of "Democracy Now" Amy Goodman was arrested by St. Paul police while covering a protest outside the Republican National Convention. Though clearly identified as press, Goodman was charged with "obstruction of a legal process and interference with a 'peace officer.'" Two of her producers were arrested for "suspicion of felony riot."
To tell you that this arrest was brutal and upsetting simply doesn't do it justice. Watch this video to see for yourself. Then take action.
I just e-mailed the presidents of CNN and NBC News (which oversees MSNBC) to demand that their networks cover this important story. I hope you will too.

While the flag waving is going on inside the convention, a threat to democracy is taking place outside.

I wish I could, but the digital divide prevents me from watching videos for the most part.
Why are you surprised? Journalists have been arrested before. For that matter what makes her being a journalist make it any more shocking than protesters being arrested. Both are trying to speak their minds. Both are exercising freedom of speech. Last I saw media was not specifically covered in the Bill of Rights, but it does say:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
But that did not stop the police in Chicago from lobbing tear gas cannisters into the crowds at sit ins or National Guard from shooting people during demonstrations. Bush has proven to be one of the worst things to have ever happened to the Presidency and the Republican Party shows no signs of changing their course.
His solution this year to throw money at the taxpayers so they could buck up the economy was ridiculous. What was I supposed to buy that was MADE in the US:cigarettes, beer, half the food in the stores is not even produced or grown here.
Yet, they try to convince us that things are getting better and when people stand up and notice. When they say we do not want things this way, they are arrested and jailed. I am not shocked. Just sad.
I meant to say that the freedom of the press is not greater than the freedom of the other individuals to gather. - Sigh I need new glasses
